The Deccan Volcanic Province covers a significant portion of the Indian subcontinent and is the subject
of much study, owing to the K-T boundary age of the bulk of the lavas. The
Deccan Traps today cover around 500,000 square kilometers, forming the Deccan
Plateau in India (e.g. Hooper, 1999; Sen, 2001).The pre-erosional volume
is estimated at around 1-2 million km3 which would make the Deccan one of the
largest volcanic eruptions on Earth.
Deccan
Trap lavas can be divided into three main types of geographic sections:
The
Western Ghats,
The
north-west section and
The
north-east section
